Window Security Upgrades

How to make your windows burglar-resistant. PAS24 explained, plus practical security upgrades for sash and casement windows.

How Burglars Get In

According to Home Office data, around 30% of domestic burglaries involve entry through a window. Old sash windows with simple fitch fasteners and single glazing are particularly vulnerable — a fitch lock can be forced with a flat-blade screwdriver in seconds. Understanding how windows fail helps you choose the right upgrades.

What Is PAS24?

PAS24 is the British security standard for doors and windows. It is not a theoretical rating — actual window samples are subjected to physical attacks including lever and wedge manipulation, cylinder attacks, and body impact tests. A window that passes PAS24 has been proven to resist sustained forced entry attempts.

Since 2015, Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations requires all new and replacement windows in dwellings to meet PAS24 or equivalent. This means if you are replacing windows, PAS24 compliance is not optional — it is a legal requirement.

Security Features That Matter

Multi-Point Locking

Traditional sash windows use a single fitch fastener at the meeting rail. This provides almost no security. Modern sash windows use espagnolette locking systems with multiple locking points along the sash — typically at the meeting rail and at the top and bottom of each sash. These are significantly harder to force than a single lock.

Laminated Glass

Standard float glass shatters into large shards that can be removed quickly. Laminated glass contains an interlayer (typically PVB) that holds the glass together when broken — like a car windscreen. Even after impact, the glass remains in the frame, creating a significant barrier. Laminated glass also provides better acoustic insulation and UV protection.

Reinforced Frames

The strongest lock in the world is useless if the frame splits. Engineered timber frames (laminated sections rather than solid) resist splitting far better than cheap softwood. Frame reinforcement at locking points further increases resistance to forced entry.

Restrictor Stays

Restrictor stays limit how far a window can open — typically to 100mm for ventilation. This prevents entry through open windows while allowing airflow. Essential for upper-floor rooms used by children and for ground-floor windows left open for ventilation.

Our Security Specification

Every window we manufacture meets PAS24 as standard — there is no upgrade or additional charge. Our specification includes multi-point espagnolette locking, toughened outer glass, shoot-bolt mechanisms, and reinforced frame sections at all locking points. Laminated glass is available as an option for maximum security.
