When a Window Doesn't Need to Open
Not every window needs to be operable. Stairwells, landings, bathrooms with mechanical ventilation, above-door fanlights, side panels flanking a French door, and large feature walls — these are all places where a fixed frame delivers more glass, slimmer sightlines, and lower cost than an opening window.
A picture window is simply a fixed pane designed to frame a view. There are no hinges, no stays, no locking mechanisms — just timber, glass, and light. The result is a cleaner, more architectural window with better thermal performance (fewer joints mean fewer cold bridges) and greater structural rigidity.
Shapes Available
- Rectangular — the standard picture window. Any width, any height. Our most affordable fixed glazing option. Ideal for feature walls, side panels, and transoms.
- Gothic, segmental, semi-circular, elliptical — arched shapes manufactured as fixed frames. Common on period properties where the arch head is fixed and the lower section is an opening casement or sash.
- Circular — full round windows. Available with sunburst glazing bars for a striking feature. Often used in gable ends, stairwells, and ecclesiastical conversions.
Glazing Bars & Patterns
Fixed frames are the natural canvas for decorative glazing. Without the constraints of opening mechanisms, bars can run in any direction and pattern.
- Georgian bars — horizontal and vertical bars creating a grid pattern. Available on all rectangular and arched shapes.
- Sunburst — radiating bars from a central point. Designed for circular windows. A defining feature of Georgian and Regency architecture.
- Intersecting — bars crossing at angles. For gothic and ecclesiastical designs.
- Plain glass — no bars. Maximum uninterrupted view.

Fixed frame windows can be manufactured to FD30 (30-minute) and FD60 (60-minute) fire resistance ratings. This is often required by Building Regulations for windows near boundaries, in escape routes, or in multi-occupancy buildings. Fire rated units use intumescent glazing and modified frame sections — we handle the certification.
