Imported vs UK Made Windows

An honest comparison of imported and British-made timber windows. Quality, cost, lead time, and what happens when something goes wrong.

The Uncomfortable Truth

A large proportion of timber windows sold in the UK are manufactured overseas — primarily in Poland, the Baltic states, and increasingly in Southeast Asia. There is nothing inherently wrong with imported joinery. Some overseas factories produce excellent work. But the economics of importing create trade-offs that buyers should understand before committing.

Where Imports Win

Price

Labour costs in Poland and the Baltic states are lower than in the UK. This translates to a genuine cost advantage on manufacturing — typically 10–20% cheaper for equivalent specifications. If budget is the primary concern and you can accept longer lead times, imported windows can offer good value.

Where UK Manufacturing Wins

Speed

The most significant advantage. UK-manufactured windows are delivered in 4–5 weeks. Imported windows take 8–16 weeks. For renovation projects with deadlines, this alone can justify the price difference.

When Things Go Wrong

This is where the real difference emerges. If an imported window arrives with the wrong colour, a dimension error, or transport damage, the replacement follows the same 8–16 week cycle. Some importers hold no stock of components, so even a replacement handle or hinge can take weeks. A UK manufacturer fixes problems in days — the workshop is right there.

Specification Flexibility

UK manufacturers can accommodate changes late in the process. Need to adjust a dimension after the survey reveals an unexpected structural issue? A UK workshop can modify the order. An overseas factory that has already started production will not.

Paint Quality

Factory-applied paint systems vary enormously. Premium UK manufacturers use Sikkens or equivalent microporous coatings — a multi-coat system specifically designed for exterior timber. Some imported windows arrive with basic paint or stain that requires recoating within 2–3 years. Ask for the exact coating specification before ordering — if the answer is vague, expect maintenance sooner than promised.

How to Decide

Choose imported windows if budget is critical, lead time is not a constraint, and you have a reliable UK-based agent who provides a meaningful warranty backed by their own resources (not just a pass-through to the overseas factory).

Choose UK-manufactured windows if speed matters, you want direct access to the manufacturer, you value quality consistency, and you want problems resolved quickly when they arise.
